Sustantivos: contables e incontables

I’m making a cup of tea.
There’s some money on the table.
Have we got any bread?

Gramática

Los sustantivos pueden ser contables o incontables. Los sustantivos contables se pueden contar, por ejemplo, una manzana, dos manzanas, tres manzanas, etc. Los sustantivos incontables no se pueden contar, por ejemplo, el aire, el arroz, el agua, etc. Cuando aprendas un sustantivo nuevo, comprueba si es contable o incontable y fíjate en cómo se utiliza en una frase.

Countable nouns

En las frases positivas podemos utilizar a/an para los sustantivos singulares o some para los plurales.

There’s a man at the door.
I have some friends in New York.

Para las oraciones negativas podemos usar a/an para los sustantivos singulares o any para los plurales.

I don’t have a dog.
There aren’t any seats.

Usamos some con sustantivos incontables en frases positivas y any con negativas.

There’s some milk in the fridge.
There isn’t any coffee.

Preguntas

En las preguntas usamos a/an, any o how many con sustantivos contables.

Is there an email address to write to?
Are there any chairs?
How many chairs are there?

Y usamos any o how much con sustantivos incontables.

Is there any sugar?
How much orange juice is there?

Pero cuando ofrecemos o pedimos algo, normalmente utilizamos some.

Do you want some chocolate?
Can we have some more chairs, please?

También usamos algunos en una pregunta cuando creemos que la respuesta va a ser “sí”.

Have you got some new glasses?

Other expressions of quantity

A lot of (o lots of) puede utilizarse tanto con sustantivos contables como incontables.

There are lots of apples on the trees.
There is a lot of snow on the road.

Fíjate en que no solemos utilizar many o much en frases positivas. En su lugar, utilizamos a lot of.

They have a lot of money.

Sin embargo, en las oraciones negativas usamos not many con sustantivos contables y not much con sustantivos incontables.

There are a lot of carrots but there aren’t many potatoes.
There’s lots of juice but there isn’t much water.
